The LGMA is a State agency that provides a range of professional services for and on behalf of local authorities, local authority chief executives, the Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, and other government departments. It works collaboratively with all 31 local authorities to support the coordinated and cost-effective delivery of local government services and policy. It also helps local authorities to implement change and enhance performance. The LGMA was established in 2012 and is an agency of the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage. It is primarily funded by the 31 local authorities.
One of the LGMA’s key focuses is leading the implementation of Digital Local Government: Working for Everyone, Ireland’s Local Government Digital and ICT Strategy 2024 to 2030. Developed in partnership with local authorities and aligned with national and European policy, the strategy sets out a shared vision for digital transformation across the sector. It is built around four core themes: digital services, digital communities, digital workforce, and digital systems. The strategy aims to ensure that 90 per cent of applicable services are available online by 2030, while maintaining a strong emphasis on inclusion, accessibility, and people-centred design.
Through this work, the LGMA supports local authorities in modernising service delivery, strengthening digital infrastructure, and aligning with national priorities such as climate action, housing, and sustainable development. The strategy also reflects the LGMA’s commitment to ensuring that digital transformation benefits all communities, while continuing to offer choice in how people access services. By fostering collaboration, building digital capability, and promoting best practice, the LGMA enables local government to deliver high-quality, secure, and responsive public services that meet the evolving needs of people and communities across Ireland.
